Gilles Hocquart

Gilles Hocquart (1694 – 1 April 1783) was from France and minor nobility. The family were successful administrators and financiers.

Hocquart was chosen to replace Claude-Thomas Dupuy as Intendant of New France because of his background and because he was deemed to be a more compatible choice to work with Governor Charles de Beauharnois. He held this position from 1729-1748. He was also Louis XIV's cousin, as well as played an important role in the short time that Esther Brandeau, said to be the first Jewish female to set foot in Canada, stayed in New France.
